Maureen Atieno

I joined HMGC in March 2006. I was so glad finally to be able to study again. The Girls Centre offered us 4 main courses that is dressmaking, basic accounts, computer studies, catering. This gave me an opportunity to choose a course which suits me, one that I had dreamt of. But being so ambitious I decided to study all of them and worked hard to pursue excellence. Our teachers were very good and kind to us an they kept on encouraging us to work hard for a better future. I listened and I made sure that after every exam I was the best among all.

Despite the fact that life was very challenging because I hardly had transport this never made me lose hope because I knew one day I will succeed.
After 12 months when we had finished covering all the topics for the course we finally graduated. I was so exited to be the 1st honor. My teachers were so happy that they awarded me certificates and also encouraged me to continue with the same spirit I had. This was not all because while in college I decide to enroll as a private candidate so that I could sit for my o level certificate. It was so stressful but my determination mattered a lot.
Immediately after graduation I went to seek for attachment in a restaurant where I would at least be recommended. In 2 weeks time I I got an attachment in  the service department.
I did service for 3 months and immediately was employed. Being an orphan I was glad that financially I got the source of school fees for my younger siblings. Later I was promoted to a cashier this made me to be respected and in was trusted.
At 20 years am now acting as a hostess in the same establishment. I thank God for everything He has done for me with the little salary I earn I pay for my 2 brothers fees, I save a little and I act as the breadwinner in our family all this make me very determined for now am planning to join another college to advance in different career as well as work at the same time. For sure experience is the best teacher.
